Some Football Thoughts From the Weekend

Rick Head Shot.jpgITEM 1: As my daughter and I were driving to the Tri Cities for the state cross country meet, we listend to the same tired discussion we heard all week on sports talk radio: If they're still ranked one and two at the end of the season, should Alabama and LSU be allowed to play a remnatch in the national championship game? On Saturday morning, my answer was, "Yes, of course." But by 8:00 on Saturday night, I had changed my answer to, "Hell no!" In fact, they should not be allowed to play each other ever again. Who wants to watch a rematch between two teams who, in four quarters and an overtime, could manage only five field goals between them? ANY soccer game ever played was more entertaining than that.

ITEM 2: My daughter, a WSU student, tells me that the WSU vs Cal game was not available on the cable system in Pullman Saturday. ROOT Sports was carrying the game, but Time-Warner Cable must have felt there weren't enough Cougar fans in Pullman to warrant showing that game. Instead, they got to see UTEP vs Rice. Obviously Mike Price is still a big draw in the Palouse.

ITEM 3: The Oregon helmets were cool in their game at Washington. But I'm going out on a limb and say that using white lettering for a player's name on the back of a white jersey is just stupid. It's not cool, it's stupid. I guess those jerseys could be covered with white swooshes and we'd never know it.

ITEM 4: Why were the officials in the Seahawks-Cowboys game wearing white pants? They were wearing black pants in other games. Have NFL officials gone to an Oregon Duck stlye of suiting up? (I did notice Nike swooshes on their caps...) Are they mixing and matching so that their fans will get excited about their gear? Who's going to be the first one at Foot Locker on Monday screaming that they must have the white referee pants?
